The language used in these edicts is Pali

The Kalsi town is known for its heritage significance and is the gateway to the tribal region of Jaunsar-Bawar in the district of Dehradun. The amazing Bourg of Kalsi, named after the rock edicts of Khalsi, inhabits people from different hilly communities, including Mundar, Khils, and Bhutis.

One of the major reasons to visit the Kalsi village is its historical importance, as it houses major inscriptions of Ashoka, the great Indian emperor of the Mauryan Empire.

There is a pear-shaped crystal rock that contains the inscription of the fourteenth edict of emperor Ashoka. It is written in Pali language with Brahmi script.

Ashoka’s edict was built around 450 BC and is 10 ft. long and 8 ft. broad. It scripted Ashoka’s human nature after the war when he took up Buddhism and committed to restriction of war & non-violence.
